Monotamy said: "MF Doom is hip-hop's marmite, you love him or you hate him. Now I love marmite, but not as much as I love Doom. So when I found out that one of the most innovative rappers is teaming up with Dangermouse I was very excited.
I got home at 04:13 and unwrapped the CD, I placed it in the CD player, pressed play, El Chupanibre starts up and I am greeted by some insane character muttering the words "Why did you buy this album, I don't know why you did, your stupid"
I laughed.
Then Doom spits the line "Chew an MC like El Chupanibre (pronounced Choo-pa-ni-bray), digest the group and sell the poop on ebay"
I laughed some more.
The crazy beat died down, then some chanting about the sofa king kicks in, the beat picks up which once again gets me nodding my head, Dooms voice bleeds into the track and I feel my brain cells melting. I take note that while listening to this I am not on any drugs and yet I'm listening to a bunch of cartoon characters pleed to be on Doom's new album, some insane babble about a sofa king, perfect beats that remind me of early morning cartoons and lyrics about joining a group named midgets into crunk and selling digested rappers on the internet. Two songs in and I love this album.
"The Mask" starts up and a rock group start singing about hiding behind a mask, then suddenly saxophone and drums blast through my speakers and I have no idea what is going on, Doom rushes through a verse that constantly has you smiling and then Ghostface arrives and drops lines like "Aqua man's pops cant water check me, disrespect me, indirectly, I seen his feet and they both lefty, he be stepping half correctly" and with that the songs over, and I still have no idea what is going on and still have a giant smile on my face.
"Perfect hair" comes and goes and I start to see the flaw with the album, ever song has you nodding your head, has you laughing and then when you really get into it, the next song begins. Every song is incredibly brief most clocking in at three minutes, some not even reaching that. I check the infomation on the album sleeve (Which has some awesome artwork) and see that this album is only 40 minutes long. Damn.
The next track "Benzie Box" features Cee-Lo who sings the hook, which I was surprised about as MF Doom and hooks don't usually go together, but this track is a work of genius. The beat is the most infectious of the whole album, I was listening to this with my father, who is not a fan of hip-hop and when I glanced over to him, he was smiling and nodding his head.... I told him to get the hell out of my room. Lyrics on point, if not a little strange but this is Doom so what do you expect. The beat alone makes this track a classic, Doom only heightens its quality.
Talib Kweli starts us off with Old school spitting an inspired verse "I was making up a miracle flow over a ceral bowl and a paused beat from my stero"
Doom does his thing and proves he and talib have a certain chemistry on the mic together that I never expected. After this track finished I stopped the album and uploaded all the tracks onto my computer and then downloaded them onto my I-Pod. I resumed listening to the CD.
Aqua teen hunger force opens with an hysterical skit and a nice verse but is let down slightly by a somewhat repetitive beat. In case you haven't guessed the album is full of really really funny skits featuring characters from cartoon networks adult swim series of shows. Doom's favourite show is Aqua teen hunder force which is what this entire track is about but if you are not a fan of the shows don't let this put you off of the album because they don't get in the way of the music, there is no "Oh hurry the fuck up and start the track" kind of thing, the skits are brief but in my opinion the album is all the better for them.
Now this is where the review gets difficult because every song is so good that it becomes difficult not to repeat myself. There is no need to talk about any furthur tracks beacuse... Well Basically, if you are an existing fan of Doom, buy this album, if you have never heard any examples of Doom but want to, buy this album. If you wan't to hear an original voice in hip-hop buy this album, and if you wan't to hear a grown man rap about vats of urine buy this album. Otherwise, to qoute Master shake "You suck, you SUCK, I hate you and I hate your stupid metal face".
"I didn't know you had any qualifications. Why do you think they call me Dr. Quinn? I thought that was a nickname, you know like Dr.Dre.... eastside."
See funny.
Every so often we need music to melt our minds, and this is the perfect example of that."
Monotamy said: "Thanks. Anyone else reckon this review was ok?"
Monotamy said: "If you plan and checking out this album, make sure you listen through it a couple of times if it is the first ever time hearing Doom, the first time I heard him I laughed like what the fuck is this, takes a while to sink in."
Monotamy said: "Did you buy it 40?"
Monotamy said: "It depends, dude has like five alter egos, hes got some more hardcore shit as Viktor vaughn which is real good, hes done a collab with madlib which is called madvillany which is real good but his best ones are out of print to tell you the truth. Just download what ever you can really, see which you like then pick up one of his newer albums on the cheap."
Monotamy said: "no one saying he the greatest, what we are saying is he is totally different from anyone else and if you looking for something that you don't usually hear, its perfect."
Monotamy said: "The cartoon skits were amazing, my favourite part. damn man. Well ok not my favourite part but you know. Master shake is a legend. Glad you liked it man."
SkAm14 said: "DangerDoom is one of my favorite albums of 2005. Doom's flow is soo nasty. Next up is the followup to Madvilliany, that's what I am waiting for."
