MC EZ (Craig Mack) & Troup
Sleeping Bag/Fresh Records, 1988
Produced by Craig Mack and Teddy Lee
-Side A-
Just Rhymin' (Vocal Mix)- 3:46
Just Rhymin' (Dub Mix)- 3:46
-Side B-
Get Retarded (Vocal Mix)- 3:50
Get Retarded (Vocal Mix)- 3:50
Those who remember Craig Mack best for his 1994 single, "Flava In Ya Ear" may be suprised to know that he had been around more than 5 years before, then known as "MC EZ", when he dropped this single. "Just Rhymin'" features EZ doing what most MC's of the day were doing... boasting. The track is backed by what I suspect is a James Brown sample, another common trend at the time, as well as some good cutting in the intro.
On the B-side, we have "Get Retarded", which I thought was better than the other track, although it's not exactly as tightly produced. It's basically EZ rhyming over a drum track with someone in the studio humming, "Zoom, zoom, zoom" over and over again. Then, by the chorus, an R&B sample cuts in as well as some horns. It doesn't seem like much, but in combination, it works very well. The only complaint that I have is that there is no instrumental for these tracks, but a dub, wherein there is almost no complete bar of the backing track without the vocals. But, I tell you that chorus is killer.
Score- 8.4/ 10

Ultramagnetic MC's
Next Plateau Records, 1988
Porduced by Ultramagnetic MC's
-Side A-
Watch Me Now (Vocal Version) 4:50
Watch Me Now (Instrumental) 4:50
-Side B-
Feelin' It (Vocal Version) 3:31
Feelin' It (Instrumental) 3:31
The 4th single release from the Ultramagnetic MC's. The A-side is the real prize of this slab of wax, with vocal stabs, horns, and huge bass abound, as well as some good rhymes from Kool Keith and Ced Gee. The B-side is honestly not as good, but the drums at the intro are perfect for looping. Credit is also due to the record company for including the instrumental of both tracks, although the "Feelin' It" instrumental includes rapping from TR Love near about 2 minutes into the track.
Score- 9.2/10"
