Common’s 4th solo effort is a complex blend of soulful & funky beats combined with insane rhyme schemes to provide a mind blowing listening experience. Common seems to be poised & ready to expose any fake artists (Dooinit) in the industry while at the same time expressing his own tales of love (The Light), stories of revenge (payback is a grandmother), insightful views and metaphorical journeys (Ghetto Heaven) & other songs that are just plain funky & original (Funky For You, Thelonius). Like Water for Chocolate is creative, humorous (A film called), soulful & poetic & its guest appearances range from Veteran femcee MC Lyte, to Slum Village, to the harmonising sounds of Macy Gray & Cee Lo. Like Water For Chocolate is definitely a display of Common, close to his best.
Intro (Time travelling) – A jazzy instrumental w/ Common getting funky with his flow in parts throughout. Extremely similar to the style Common adopted & evolved into on his Electric Circus album. The intro is skippable, but a must listen for lovers of jazzy instrumentals.
Heat – This song has very old school production by Jay Dee & even goes into a clapping sample at some parts. Common spit fiya with punches like, you couldn’t “fuck with my style” if you were a “nympho”! Common’s rhyme scheme is crazy & the hook is rather simple yet effective.
Cold Blooded – Produced by ?uestlove from the Roots & a funky hook provided by Black Thought, this is one of the hottest tracks on the album. Common’s rhyme scheme is just fucking sickness as he attacks the commercial world telling us “that jiggy shit is over, the war is on! I only wanna be a soldier but I’m holding on, to a culture, focused like Gordon Parkes, when it’s sorta dark, for niggas flooded with ice my thoughts the art! Definitely one of the top songs off the album, you should find this track being repeated quite often!
Dooinit – Common expresses his feelings toward certain parts of the hip-hop industry. Spitting deepness & subliminally dissing material rappers. The hook is original & has an old school feel to it and the beat is funky. Common’s flow & multis are on point for the whole song.
The Light – Common opens his heart & sends a shout out to his girl that he’ll always be there for her & how much he respects her. Bilal provides the hook, which is very harmonious but can become a little bit annoying after to many listens. The beat is average but the message is deep & thoughtful.
Funky For You – The beat to this song is so funky! (Hence the name) Common experiments with a style where he ends each rhyme with ahh! I’m a child of the (ahh), the 87 (ahh) from the streets; get on a beat & go (ahh!). The experimenting with styles is a success & this song ends up being one of the best listens on the album. The 2-minute outro is rather unnecessary & drags on a little bit but doesn’t ruin the song.
The Questions – This song is rather bizarre, from what could have been a great concept w/ a guest appearance from Mos Def. This song in fact turns out to be quite disappointing with limited thought put into the hook & a guess appearance by Macy Gray, which is really not needed. Seems a lot more like Common, Mos & Macy were just sitting round in the studio getting high or drunk & made up the song in half an hour. The beat is funky, but the lyrics are weak & not what we’ve come to expect from Com & Mos.
Time Travellin Reprise – Another soulful instrumental, really just a filler track, with not much purpose. It is definitely skippable.
The 6th Sense – The top track of the album in my opinion, Common continues his crusade against anything fake or commercial spitting insane rhymes over a tight DJ Premier beat. Bilal provides a nice hook, which seems to fit perfectly with the scratches Primo provides for the beat. The song fades out with a humorous skit by Common, in which he portrays a pimp & totally contradicts compliments he gets from one of his fans about his conscience rhymes. Quite funny & you know Common is tryna make a point. It’s also sort of an intro for the next song…
A Film Called (PIMP) – This song is aight, not really Common’ style but the hook is very funky & MC Lyte provides a good guess appearance. Common again uses vivid visual story telling & insane metaphors with lines like “her body language spoke like a smart remark” or “see she had game, needed me to coach her!” The song then fades out with another instrumental & also changes into
Nag Champa – This song is a bit of a change in pace for the album, a lot more like some of his songs from “Be” especially reminiscent of the “Love” song. The hook has got an R n B feel to it & Common continues to attack anything fake with lines like “In this never ending battle to please, niggas, magazine writers MC’s”. His flow is a lot slower than most songs, but still on point as always!
Thelonius – This song is not Common’s best lyrical display of the album, but instead displays his diversity & ability to spit in many styles. The hook is very tight & flows incredibly well, the beat is proly the funkiest off the album. Slum Village make a guest appearance & don’t disappoint. Common doesn’t really murder them on this track like you’d expect. Not sure if that was intentional or not? Lol. The song ends with a skit of Common on his celly with an urgent message from his grandmother saying she got robbed. (Leads into next song)
Payback is a Grandmother – This song is rather humorous & amusing as Common proves payback is a bitch. Getting his revenge on wax as he tells the story about his grandmother getting robbed. His flow is very good for story telling & the hook is rather simple just choosing to use a bit of scratching. The story actually ends with Com discovering that his barber was the one who robbed his grandmother & after whopping his ass a truck pulls up with 6 dudes there’s gun shots & police sirens & we can only assume Com got away! haha
Ghetto Heaven – The official single from the album, Ghetto Heaven features Macy Gray on the hook & doesn’t disappoint, as Macy seems to fit the track like a toy train set. The beat is very soothing & melodious & Common is extremely deep in this song dealing with issues in the ghetto & expressing his opinions & thoughts. He has an incredible flow the whole track & Macy’s harmonising on the hook only makes this track a more fantastic listen.
Song For Assata – This song is extremely soulful, as Common tells the Story of Assata and her journey w/ the black panthers. It is a good story with insane flow & rhymes schemes yet again. Cee Lo provides a really good hook also but seems to go a bit overboard towards the end of the song. It also includes voice samples from Assata, which adds a good touch to the song to help you feel the story. Common continue to contemplate through the song “I wonder what would happened if that woulda been me? All of this just so we could be free?”
Pops Rap 3…all my children – The album concludes with Common’s pops talking over a funky beat thanking his son & at the same time, sharing some wisdom.
Overall the album is insane & you’ll rarely find yourself skipping any songs. It can be described as innovative, original, soulful, funky, insightful & most importantly enjoyable. If it is not in your collection or constantly getting selected on your iPod I suggest you go & do something about it!
Fave Song – The 6th Sense
Fave Line – When penitentiary talk, coke and a hennesy walk, my imagery talks, metaphors and similies stalk!

1.Intro
The beat is very well put together with the DJ scratching on it. The beat has a up lifting feel with quintet of trumpets. His lyrics on this are fairly good with very nice vocab which makes this a superb intro for a CD.

TheTruth said: "7.Hell
On this track his features Canibus, who brings a decent verse to the table. They are indirectly referring to the rap game as hell. I wasnt feeling the beat but still it was effective intertwined with there lyrics.
-Favorite lines-Monch's Lines

My phonetics alone forces feeble MC's into defense on the fly

8.No Mercy
This song is fairly good, the beat sets it off nicely. Pharoahe's vocab is out of control through out his whole verse. He features M.O.P on this track, who bring a decent but not spectactular verse.
-Favorite Lines-Monchs
Fuck the trinity inseminate the earth now, take its virginity
In my vicinity rap is like energy pack
This rhyme, will remain in the minds of my foes forever in infamy
The epitome of lyrical epiphanies
Skillfully placed home we carefully plan symphonies
Who would be ignorant enough to have the audacity
to fuck wit the likes of I and my tenacity?
This is, what you, get when, you fuck,
with the, likes of, the magnanimous flows
of total assholes and ignoramuses

The master, flippin convertible flows irreversible
Unobtainable to the brain it's unexplainable what the verse'll do

10.The Next Shit
On this track i would say this is Monchs weakiest verse so far on this CD. I wasnt impressed with the beat it has a wild wild west feel to it. Busta Rhymes comes with a decent verse on this track.

14.The Truth
This track brings a strong message about Truth. With Common and Talib Kweli bringin solid verse on this topic it polished the track off nicely..All three verses come together to make a real deep piece of work.
-Favorite Lines-
Monch
Truth brings light, light refracts off the mirror
Visions of yourself and error could never clearer
The truth is that you ugly, not on the outside
But in the inside on the outside you frontin you lovely
The discovery of these things and all are well-hidden
But when you in denial of self it is forbidden, that's the truth
Common
Let the truth be told from young souls that become old
>From days spent in the jungle, where must one go
To find it, time is real, we can't rewind it
Out of everybody I met, who told the truth? Time did
We find kids speakin cuz it's naturally in us
But the false prophets by tellin us we born sinners
Venders of hate, got me battlin my own mind state
At a divine rate, I ain't in this just to rhyme great
Wonderin why I gotta drink a six pack to speak it
Took a picture of the truth and tried to develop it
Had proof, it was only recognized by the intelligent
Took the negative and positive, cuz niggas got to live
Talib Kweli
Check it, on my neck I still got marks from the nooses
The truth it produces, fear that got niggas on the run like Carl Lewis
The truth is my crew is the smoothest bits of saliva juices like the roots is
More organic than acoustics
This must be the truth (why?) cuz we keep marchin on (true)
The truth lay the foundation of what we rockin on (true)
You can't see it if you blind but we will always prevail (true)
Life is like the open sea, the truth is the wind in our sail
And in the end, our names is on the lips of dying men
If ever crushed in the earth, we always rise again
When the words of lying men sound lush like the sound of a violin
The truth is there, it's just the heart you gotta find it in

Two choices, either squeeze or peel, now that's real
Monch
Uh I bust a rhyme that dust frustrated rappers
Dust crush competition, lights out like the Clapper
Redman

I'm too smoked up, I can't remember me
Off Hennesy, that's why I carry Mini-Me
MethodMan
Walk through Shaolin after dark, you get stuck up
Seek and destroy, baddest boy when I'm puffed up
Assholes are like opinions, everybody got to have one
Shootin in the sky tryin to blast sun
Zero to sixty in a second, pull a fast one
Underground and filthy, gotta have our Way like the Milky
Shabaam Sahdeeq
You herbs get flipped like jeeps on mountain cliffs
Y'all crabs are weak, frail like a fiend's physique
Busta Rhymes
Enough substance in the roughness
Now watch it come around in an amazing large abundance
Now let me clear the smoke screen you blow fiend
Live nigga shit that'll rebuild your whole self-esteem
